A spokesman of the Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas, said today that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is harming the efforts for Palestinian unity.
In an interview with the Hamas-owned Palestinian Information Center Dr. Sami Abu Zuhri, spokesman for the Al-Qassam Brigades, said that recent statements made by Abbas are false and an “unnecessary media escalation” and are “harmful for the efforts to ensure national unity”.
Abbas said on Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation TV that he has the right to appoint the new head of the interim government and has already named Salaam Fayyad for the post. The appointment however, has to be confirmed by the Hamas-dominated Palestinian Legislative Council, something that seems to be highly unlikely at present. On the other hand, the appointment of a Hamas candidate instead of Fayyad could be a major stumbling block to get more much-needed funding from the EU and the US
Abu Zuhri also accused Abbas of resuming the actions against members and supporters of Hamas in the West Bank. Palestinian police had arrested eleven Hamas members on Monday in Nablus, Ramallah and Qalqilyah. The arrests came after the cancellation of a meeting between Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas Politburo Chief Khaled Meshaal in Cairo.
